Slow start dooms Cougar team in 75-63 road defeat
- Taft College returns to play Saturday
Cold shooting here Wednesday ruined the Taft College's chance to get off to a 2-0 start in Central Valley Conference women's basketball.
The host Pirates raced out to a 41-25 lead at the half and never let the Cougars reel them in.
The loss drops the Cougars to 1-1 in the conference and 6-11 overall heading into Saturday's 7 p.m. game at Merced College (1-1 CVC, 9-9 overall).
The Cougars came out cold and never really warmed up.
TC shot just 24.6 percent from the field, making 17 of 69 shot attempts, including 4-of-24 from three-point range.
Eighteen turnovers kept them from gaining any momentum.
Leading scorer Erica Evans led the Cougars with 13 points, well below her average of 20-plus.
She was 4-of-14 overall and made only 1 of her 7 tries from behind the arc where she usually is the most dangerous.
Evans had 6 rebounds and 4 steals.
Forward Crystallyn Feletoi came off the bench to score 10 points and pull down 9 rebounds.
Center Bezait Anbesse had 9 rebounds but just 2 points in the paint.
Ramonique Redding had 9 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals.
Zanoria Echols had 6 points and 5 rebounds.
