Some men in uniform joined up with Vets Against School Shootings to stand at the entrances to Taft area schools.
Leo Morales went on his own.
Morales, the father of four and a member of the United States Navy Individual Ready Reserves, stood guard at the Taft College Child Care Center all day in his uniform.
It was his way of helping out in the wake of the shooting at Taft Union High School last week
He has good reason.
His four-year-old son attends the center.
"I went alone and just volunteered," Morales said. "As a veteran, you want the kids to be safe today."
Morales served 8 years in the Navy as a Seabee who served at Port Hueneme and in San Diego.
He has three older children aged 5, 7 and 11 who attend school in Maricopa.
Explaining the shooting to them I terms they could understand was difficult.
"It's hard to explain to them who would do such a thing or why it would happen. You would like to think school is a safe place."
