A fast start here Wednesday night pushed College of the Sequoias to a 66-56 Central Valley Conference women’s basketball victory over Taft College.
The Giants raced out to a 44-28 halftime bulge the Cougars were unable to overcome despite outscoring COS in the second half.
Freshman guard Erica Evans scored 24 points and grabbed 6 rebounds to lead the Cougars (1-3 CVC, 6-13 overall).
After three consecutive conference road game losses, the Cougars hope some home cooking will get them back in the win column Saturday when they host West Hills-Lemoore (0-4, 3-14) in the Al Baldock Cougar Sports Center.
Tip-off is at 5 p.m.
Sophomore guard Zanoria Echols was the only other Cougar besides Evans with any scoring power. She pumped in 19 points and led the Cougars with 7 rebounds.
Ramonique Redding came off the bench to score 5 points and grab 4 rebounds while Bezait Anbesse had 2 points and 5 rebounds.
Mylasia Smith, Schalon Baysinger and Crystallyn Faletoi each scored 2 points.
Evans was 8-of-18 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the free-throw line.
Overall, the Cougars shot 32 percent (23-of-71) from the field and 64 percent (7-of-11) from the line.
