Baseball starts Friday while softball hosts San Joaquin Delta College in a double header

Spring sports will swing into action at Taft College this weekend with home baseball and softball games scheduled.

The Cougar baseball team christens its season at home today with a doubleheader against northern California powerhouse Feature River College, and both baseball and softball will play home games on Saturday.

After opening with Feather River today, the Cougars will play Los Angeles Harbor Saturday at 2 p.m.  Feather River and Harbor will play the morning game at Cougar Field.

The Cougar softball team will host San Joaquin Delta College of Stockton Saturday in a doubleheader at the Al Baldock Cougar Sports Center.  The games are scheduled for noon and 2 p.m.

TC is 1-0 after opening the season last Saturday with a 2-1 win over College of the Siskiyous in a game played in Visalia.

Baseball coach Vince Maiocco will start sophomores Allen Sanchez and P.J. Matha in today’s games.

Sanchez was one of the top pitchers in the state last year until he broke an ankle in the first conference game and was granted a medical redshirt season.

Matha was a reliever last year but has worked his way into the starting rotation.

Saturday’s starter will probably be freshman Brandon Van Stone.

Meanwhile, the Cougar women’s basketball team will be in action Saturday, playing at Reedley College to start the second round of Central Valley Conference action.
