It has become an annual tradition for several Taft High football players to take part in the US Army Arena Bowl. That tradition will continue this year when Wildcat quarterback Vaughn Richardson and Matua Iakopo compete in the 2013 version Friday, April 19 at Rabobank Arena.
Both players will be part of the black team. Joining Richardson and Iakopo on the team are Bakersfield Christian’s Robert Keathley, Wasco’s Kyle Wedel and Arvin’s Jordan Wood along with players from Garces, Independence, Frontier, Centennial, Frazier Mountain, Liberty, Bakersfield High, West, Stockdale, Northwest Christian and Ridgeview.
Richardson and Iakopo will go up against familiar players in Shafter’s Derrick Barton, Wasco’s Garrett Johnson and Arvin’s Orlando Perez. Those three players will be joining others from Garces, Independence, Frontier, Centennial, Golden Valley, West, Bakersfield High School, Stockdale, Liberty Ridgeview, Kern Valley and South.
Richardson completed his career at Taft High this past season by going 95-for-233 for 1693 yards with 15 touchdowns. Meanwhile, Iakopo led in rushing with 51 carries for 760 yards and seven touchdowns. Iakopo also had five catches for 153 yards and two touchdowns. On the defensive end, Iakopo had 74 tackles.
Tickets for the game are $12 which includes a user’s fee.
