Taft College defeats Mustangs 3-1 and 6-2
Taft College improved to 3-0 Saturday by sweeping a softball doubleheader from the No. 3 team in the state.
Behind solid pitching performances from sophomore Jessica Neher and freshman Cheyenne Emerson, the Cougars defeated the Mustangs 3-1 and 6-2 on the Al Baldock Cougar Sports Center field.
Delta, one of the premier programs in the state, came into the season ranked No. 3 in the state and No. 2 in northern California following a 36-9 season last year.
Neher, a sophomore who prepped at Taft High, got her second win of the season, scattering seven hits, striking out two and walking four.
She also went 2-for-3 at the plate, including a double, and drove in two of the Cougars’ three runs.
Brooklyn Amador went 2-for-3 to drive in the third run and came back in the second game with two hits and an RBI.
The Cougars scored twice in the fourth and once in the sixth to take a 3-0 lead before the Mustangs scored their lone run in the top of the seventh.
Venise Eliusara, Yarelli Delgado, Ashley McKeown had base hits, and Tuiai Elisara had a single and RBI.
Emerson, from Kirtland, N.M., gave up 10 hits in the second game but worked out of a number of jams with help from a defense that played errorless ball. She struck out two and did not walk a batter.
The Cougars, meanwhile, banged out 11 hits that included a homerun from McKeown and doubles by Kelina Nakai, Amador and Tuiai Elisara. Each drove in a pair of runs.
Next up for the Cougars is a doubleheader Saturday in San Jose where they will play Modesto JC and San Jose City College.
