James N. Witherell, 79, passed away on January 25, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Redding, California surrounded by his loving family.
Jim was born on September 25, 1933 in Portland, Maine to James Nelson and Margaret Noecker Witherell and grew up in several cities in the US and abroad during his father’s naval career.
After graduating high school he joined the Army and served for four years, meeting his future wife Karen while stationed in Germany. Jim married Karen in 1956 in Frankfurt, Germany.
He graduated from San Jose State University in 1963 and accepted a position teaching at College of the Siskiyous in Weed, California where he was instrumental in the development of the theater department, and was the school’s first sports and information director.
He retired in 1997 but continued to teach and volunteer at the college. He was honored with the Emeritus Faculty award and is a member of the COS Athletic Hall of Fame recognizing his years of volunteerism with the COS Football program.
He enjoyed gardening, stamp collecting, writing, directing, producing and performing in theater productions and was a published playwright.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Karen of Dunsmuir, California; son, Shaun (and Mindy); daughter Kate; son, Dan (and Nancy); son, Brian (and Karin); daughter, Meghan; sisters, Joanne Coffrini and Judy Witherell; 10 grandchildren; and 15 nieces and nephews.
A celebration in honor of Jim’s life will be held at the College of the Siskiyous, Kenneth W. Ford Theater in Weed on Saturday, February 16 at 2 p.m.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 16 at St. Johns Church in Dunsmuir.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to COS Foundation Scholarship Program.
