The Taft varsity boys basketball team ignored the hostile road environment Friday night and beat Robert F. Kennedy 64-55.
After the teams battled to a 5-5 tie to begin the game, the Wildcats caught fire with an 11-2 run thanks to four points from Jacob Lopez.
Kennedy bounced back with a basket to narrow the deficit to 16-10.
Bit by bit the Wildcats increased their lead in the second quarter before holding a 30-16 lead with 1:49 to go.
The Thunderbirds then came back with an 11-4 run to trail 34-27 at the half.
Kennedy continued the run early in the third quarter and tied the score at 34. Steven Gee took over by scoring 14 of the Wildcats next 16 points.
But the Thunderbirds countered with 10 during that period of time to trail 50-44.
Taft held a single digit lead through most of the fourth quarter before they rallied again.
Gee scored on a layup with 46 seconds left in the game to give the Wildcats a 62-52 lead.
Taft closes out their regular season next Friday when they host Bakersfield Christian.
