Taft College looks to shake off last week's dismal hitting performance with a three-game home series with Monterey Peninsula College today and tomorrow.
They square off today at 1:30 on the TC campus field and play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m.
The Cougars got good pitching and defense in last weekend's three-game set with Siskiyous and Barstow but lost two of the three because of weak hitting.
TC's team batting average is .193 while opponents are hitting .248. Monterey has a .240 team average while the pitching staff has allowed a .217 average.
Freshman leadoff hitter Travis Tessandori has been on a torrid pace for the Cougars, hitting .458. Catcher Dayton Kurian is at .333, Luis Trinidad .217 and Clint Jorgensen .208. Everyone else is below .200.
Allan Sanchez leads the pitching staff with a 1.12 earned run average, 15 strikeouts and just two walks in 16 innings.
Kevin Little has a 1.12 ERA as well in eight innings of work, Matt Gunderson 1.69 in five and a third innings, and Brandon Van Stone 2.02 in 13.1 innings.
Michael Vaquera is 3.86 in 7 innings and P.J. Matha 4.82 in 9.1 innings.
Cougar pitchers have struck out 48 and walked 14 in their 62 innings of work.
The defense has been solid too with just 6 errors – two of them overthrows by pitchers on pickoff attempts.
