Three people at home when fire broke out but they escape flames
Fire heavily damaged a South Taft home Monday morning.
Three people – a mother and her two sons – were at home when the fire broke out just before 8 a.m. and all three made it out safely.
Kern County Fire Department Capt. Josh Naus said one child woke up his mother and brother and alerted them to the fire in the rear of the home.
“They were able to exit the home safely,” the captain said. “They attempted to make a small attack on the fire but realized it was futile.”
Naus said the family had a smoke detector in the home, but it did not sound. He said this serves as a good reminder to people to check their smoke detectors periodically to make sure they are in good working order.
The fire broke out about 7:45 a.m. at 211 GP.
A total of four people lived in the home and are making arrangements to stay with friends, Naus said.
No damage figure was immediately available.
The cause is still under investigation.
