Wildcats win 108 games to just 10 for GV
The Taft High varsity and JV boys' tennis teams got off to a good start in 9-0 drubbings of the Golden Valley bulldogs in the season openers
The games were one-sided with Taft's varsity winning by 108-10 in games and the JV winning 96-15 in games.
In the No. 1 varsity match, Rafa Arreguin beat Luis Acevedo, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2, Chuy Gutierrez beat Isiah Contreras, 6-2, 6-0. Matua Iakopo beat Jorge Medina, 6-0, 6-3. Cameron Bunch was the first one off the court with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Eddie Godinez. Cristo Miranda beat Carlos Correa, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 6, Brayan Herrera beat Erick Magana, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, Herrera and Oscar Martinez blanked Contreras and Godinez, 6-0, 6-0. Bunch and Gilbert Orozco beat Acevedo and Magana, 6-0, 6-1. And, Pastor Magana and Kyler Fields beat Oscar Baeza and Anthony Ponce, 6-1, 6-1.
At Golden Valley, Taft's JV team created a similar plot line.
In the No. 1 JV match, Isaiah Sharp bageled Chris Perez, 6-0, 6-0. Brian Ortega beat Lemuel Mason, 6-2, 6-0. Justin Covington beat Travis Beebe, 6-1, 6-0. Phuc Nguyen beat Branden Padilla, 6-1, 6-1. Elver Zavala beat Vladamir Quintana, 6-1, 6-0. And Sergio Robles beat Gil Suddep, 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles, Sharp and Ortega beat Perez and Ozzy Medina, 8-5 in a pro set. Covington and Pedro Martinez beat Mason and Beebe, 8-1. And, George Hartley and Kaleb Harlan beat Abraham Sandoval and Andres Mariano, 8-2.
Taft's varsity and JV teams travel to Delano to face Robert F. Kennedy High School in the league opener on Tuesday.
