  • The Taft varsity baseball team has been competing in different locations since the start of their season. Yet no matter where they go one thing has remained the same-winning. It continued Tuesday afternoon when they came back to defeat Golden Valley 8-4 in another round of the Terrio Classic in Bakersfield.
“Our pitching and defense was solid,” said Taft coach Anthony Reed. “We kept the innings small when they had scoring opportunities and we made the routine plays to get us back in the dugout quick."
With the victory, Taft improves to 5-0 in the young season.
Golden Valley had the early momentum by scoring a run in the first inning before scoring two in the second. Taft bounced back with two runs in the third and two runs in the fourth before erupting for four runs in the fifth.
The Bulldogs got one run back in the seventh inning but it was not enough.
Steven Gee was 1-for-3 with three runs batted in while Austin Pendergrass had a run batted in. Kyle Adkins was 1-for-4 with two runs batted in while Danny Romo had a run batted in. Zack Brown was the winning pitcher for Taft while Austin Toerner was the losing pitcher for Golden Valley.
“Our hitting is still lacking with our potential not capitalizing with guys in scoring position but that will come with more at bats and the hitters getting more comfortable at the plate,” said Reed.
Taft returns to action Wednesday when they take on Independence High School at Sam Lynn BallPark.
“Independence will be a good team so we will need to keep pitching and playing defense well and continue to get better at the plate,” said Reed.
The game begins at 4 p.m.
