Man accused of threatening to burn home with child inside
Suspect also charged with criminal threats and possession of stolen property
A Derby Acres man free on bail from an oilfield theft arrest was arrested again this week for more serious charges, including threatening his girlfriend and their young child and even threatening to burn his house down with his child in it.
The investigation into that case linked Jones to more oilfield theft charges, and allegations that he stole a truck found burning several days earlier in a remote area near McKittrick.
William Jones III, 34 was arrested at his Derby Acres home Monday on charges of attempted arson, child endangerment and criminal threats as well as vehicle theft and possession of stolen property.
Sgt. Martin Downs said deputies were sent to a home on the 23000 block of Arnold Avenue in Derby Acres for a report of domestic violence, including information that the suspect was breaking the windows out of the house he shared with his girlfriend and child.
Sgt. Martian Downs said Jones had poured gasoline around the house and was threatening to set fire to it.
The child was in the house at the time.
They contacted Jones and placed him under arrest.
They also noticed numerous items in the yard, and, since Jones was already out on bail for a prior arrest for stealing items from the oilfields, detectives from the Rural Crimes Investigations Unit, who were in the area investigating a theft from Gene Watson Construction on Henry Road, investigated.
They located items that were subsequently linked to a truck that had been stolen from KSI on March 1 and found burned in a remote area behind Melody Hills Ranch in the McKittrick area. Those items included an air compressor and tools.
Jones was charged with attempted arson, willful cruelty to a child, threatening with intent to terrorize, vandalism, and two counts of possession of stolen property.
Downs said gasoline was stolen in the theft at Gene Watson Construction but it is not known if Jones was involved in that theft.
Court records show Jones is on probation for a 2012 stolen property conviction and was also on bail for a Feb. 19 arrest for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.
