The Taft High varsity boys’ tennis team beat the Arvin Bears, 8-1, on Wednesday and the McFarland Cougars, 9-0, on Tuesday. Taft’s JV shut out Arvin, 9-0. McFarland did not field a JV team.
In the Arvin match, the Bear’s No. 1 player, who was the second-best player in the league last year, Mario Cabaloza, beat Rafa Arreguin, 6-0, 6-2. It was all Taft after that. Chuy Gutierrez beat Julio Moreno, 6-3, 6-4. Matua Iakopo beat Nicho Hernandez, 6-2, 6-0. Cameron Bunch shut out Miguel Lopez, 6-0, 6-0. Cristo Miranda shut out Daniel Dominguez, 6-0, 6-0. And, Brayan Herrera shut out Erik Moreno, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Iakopo and Bunch beat Cabaloza and Hernandez, 8-2, in a pro set. Herrera and Kyler Fields beat Moreno and Lopez, 8-2. And, Oscar Martinez and Pastor Magana skunked Ahmad Ikram and Rafael De La Cruz, 8-0.
Arvin dropped to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in the South Sequoia League.
In McFarland, Taft won every set, 6-0, 6-0, the first time that has happened in the past 15 seasons, coach Jim Carnal said.
With the wins, Taft improved to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in league. McFarland is 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the SSL.
In Taft’s JV match against Arvin, Isaiah Sharp beat Christian Vargas, 8-0. Brian Ortega beat Jose Martinez, 8-2. Sam Kendrick beat Alex Watson, 8-2, Justin Covington beat Luis Aceves, 8-0. Phuc Nguyen beat Abel Fuentis, 8-0. Elver Zavala beat Brian Isias, 8-0.
Sharp and Sergio Robles beat Martinez and Watson, 8-0. Kendrick and Zavala beat Vargas and Oswaldo Rosales, 8-2. And, Kaleb Harlan and George Hartley beat Oscar Mendez and Johnathan Pinele, 8-0.
