  • The Taft varsity softball team was supposed to continue their tournament run this past weekend. Instead, the Lady Wildcats were only able to play two games and win both of them in a rain shortened Bakersfield High Tournament last Thursday.
“We did very well against Independence and Cimmarron,” said Taft coach Russell Emberson.
With the two victories, Taft improves to 6-1 on the young season.
The Lady Wildcats started their only day of the tournament with a 9-0 victory over Independence.
Taft erupted for four runs in the first inning. After scoring one in the third, the Lady Wildcats erupted four runs again in the fourth.
Mackenzie Thornsberry was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a run batted in. Tara Kelley was 1-for-3 with a run and two runs batted in.
Mikayla Davis and Kayla Spoonemore each had a run batted in while Caitlyn Emberson was 1-for-2 with two runs batted in. Corie Evans was 1-for-2 with a home run, a run scored and three runs batted in.
Arizona Pilgrim threw a complete game one hitter while striking three batters and walking three.
Taft faced a different opponent in their second game with a 3-1 victory over Cimmarron Memorial of Las Vegas Nevada.
“Defensively we were a little shaky in the second game but we scored enough to win,” said Emberson.
Cimmarron Memorial took the early advantage with a run in the top of the third inning on two errors. Taft bounced back with two runs in their half of the third and one in the fourth.
Kelsey Wilmer was 2-for-2 with one of the hits coming on a triple. She also scored a run and had a run batted in. Haylee Tracy was 2-for-3 while Thornsberry and Emberson each were 1-for-2 with a run. Thornsberry also scored a run in the game while Emberson knocked in two runs with a single.
Pilgrim tossed a complete game one hitter striking out seven batters over four innings while not allowing a walk.
Taft will play their first official home game this Friday when they take on Ridgeview in a doubleheader at Franklin Field Complex. The first game starts at 3:30 p.m.
