  • The Taft High varsity boys’ tennis team shut out Cesar Chavez, 9-0, on Monday and Taft’s JV won, 8-1.
The top two varsity matches were competitive. At No. 1 singles, Rafa Arreguin outlasted Zedrick Cabico, 7-6 (11-9), 6-4, and at No. 2, Chuy Gutierrez beat Joel Rojas, 6-1, 5-7, 10-5. The rest of the matches were decidedly one sided. Matua Iakopo was leading Jed Marasigan, 3-0, when the Chavez boy could no longer continue. He told his coach that he had not eaten all day.
Cameron Bunch was the first one off the court with a quick, 6-1, 6-2 win over Gerardo Arzola. Cristo Miranda made quick work of Juan Gallegos, 6-1, 6-0. And, Brayan Herrera made it a singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Eugenio Tatunay.
The story had a similar plot line in doubles. Iakopo and Bunch teamed to beat Cabico and Rojas, 8-5. Kyler Fields and Gilbert Orozco beat John Andreas and Pedro Juarez, 8-2. And, Oscar Martinez and Pastor Magana bageled Neil Nair and Raymond Rabena, 8-0.
