The Taft High varsity boys’ tennis team shut out Cesar Chavez, 9-0, on Monday and Taft’s JV won, 8-1.
The top two varsity matches were competitive. At No. 1 singles, Rafa Arreguin outlasted Zedrick Cabico, 7-6 (11-9), 6-4, and at No. 2, Chuy Gutierrez beat Joel Rojas, 6-1, 5-7, 10-5. The rest of the matches were decidedly one sided. Matua Iakopo was leading Jed Marasigan, 3-0, when the Chavez boy could no longer continue. He told his coach that he had not eaten all day.
Cameron Bunch was the first one off the court with a quick, 6-1, 6-2 win over Gerardo Arzola. Cristo Miranda made quick work of Juan Gallegos, 6-1, 6-0. And, Brayan Herrera made it a singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Eugenio Tatunay.
The story had a similar plot line in doubles. Iakopo and Bunch teamed to beat Cabico and Rojas, 8-5. Kyler Fields and Gilbert Orozco beat John Andreas and Pedro Juarez, 8-2. And, Oscar Martinez and Pastor Magana bageled Neil Nair and Raymond Rabena, 8-0.
Taft improved to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the South Sequoia League. Chavez dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the SSL.
In the JV match, Isaiah Sharp beat Carl Mateo, 6-3, 6-0. Brian Ortega shut out Riggie Casabar, 6-0, 6-0. Sam Kendrick beat Mahin C., 6-1, 6-0. Phuc Nguyen beat Jorge Arreola, 6-3, 6-0. And, Elver Zavala bageled Bruce Garza, 6-0, 6-0. Chavez only brought five JV players so they had to default No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.
In doubles, No. 7 George Hartley and No. 9 Kaleb Harlen lost to No. 1 Mateo and No. 2 Casabar, 8-6. Mario Quiroga and Alex Arguello beat Mahin C. and Arreola, 8-5.
Taft’s JV improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the SSL.
