Cost of providing security kills popular Labor Day weekend event

There apparently isn't going to be a Taft Bike Fest this year.

Several sources have told the Taft Midway Driller that the third annual Labor Day Weekend event is going to be cancelled after a meeting between Two-Wheel Productions and Taft Police.

The city told Two-Wheel Productions, the event organizer, that the event organizers would be responsible for the cost of providing security – either law enforcement officers or private security – for the three-day event held each Labor Day.

The organizers said that would be two costly and Two-Wheel Productions isn't going to move forward with plans for another Bike Fest after two very popular events in 2011 and 2012.

Organizers confirmed the bad news with a posting on Facebook:

"Due to unforeseen circumstances out of our control and with our deepest regret and sadness, this year's 3rd annual Taft Bike Fest has been cancelled. However we will be trying to put together some concert series for this spring for Relay For Life and other charity events to show them BIKERS do care. Thank you all."

The Bike Fest attracted hundreds of people to the Rails to Trails for exhibits, food, a beer garden and live music, and raised several thousand dollars for Alpha House and other local charities.
