Last week’s Taft College softball fortunes started out on a high note with a doubleheader sweep of No. 3-ranked College of the Sequoias before No. 10 Fresno erased a 6-2 Cougar lead with a 10-run inning.
The Cougars were riding high after sweeping Sequoias in Visalia on Tuesday and continued that theme Thursday in their single home game with Fresno through four innings.
Taft led 6-2 heading into the fifth on the strength of a pair of three-run innings, capped by Brooklyn Amador’s bases-loaded double in the fourth that drove in three.
At that point TC appeared on the verge of knocking off two of the state’s top teams.
Then the wheels came off.
Fresno, which moved into the first place with TC’s sweep of Sequoias, put together a 10-run fifth en route to overwhelming the Cougars 15-7.
That was Fresno’s sixth straight conference victory, and the Rams followed it with three The Rams scored in the first inning on a homer before the Cougars put up three runs in the second.
After Ashley McKeown walked and pitcher Jessica Neher singled, Fresno mishandled an infield grounder by Jill Del Villar. McKeown alertly scampered home. Tiuai Elisara doubled into the left field corner to score Neher and Peyton Buen drove a double to left to get Del Villar home.
Tuiai Elisara singled with one out to start the fourth inning rally. Buen and Chelsea Eli-Kido walked to load the bases and set the table for Amador’s double.
Taft is 4-3 in the conference and 12-15 overall heading into today’s home doubleheader with winless West Hills.
