Planning underway for student bookstore/student center/cafeteria on east end of quad.
Taft College's new $12.5 million Center for Independent Living project was at about 88 percent completion at the end of February and is on-track for work to be finished by the end of May, the West kern Community College Board was told last week.
The building, which will house both classrooms and living areas for students in the college's Transition to Independent Living program, is one of the centerpiece projects in the multimillion dollar campus modernization.
Anticipated move-in is during this summer.
Other projects are moving ahead.
Working drawings have been received for the dorms modernization project and AP Architects is addressing plan check comments for ultimate project approval. The modernization of both the Ash Street and Transition to Independent Living dorms is scheduled to start this summer and be completed in fall 2014.
Construction documents are in process for the student center/cafeteria/bookstore, which will be located south of the Kern County Library branch, between Wildcat Way and the college quad/courtyard.
Meetings are being held with committee members for plan development.
The anticipated construction date is the winter of 2014-15, pending completion of the dorms modernization.
