WASCO — The Taft High varsity boys’ tennis team shut out the Wasco Tigers, 9-0, on Tuesday and Taft’s JV won, 8-1.
Only two varsity matches were competitive: the No. 1 singles and the No. 3 doubles. In both cases, Taft players got off to slow starts before pulling away.
At No. 1 singles, Rafa Arreguin won the first four games against Ismael Castro, then lost the next five, before running the next nine, 7-5, 6-0. At No. 2, Chuy Gutierrez beat Christian Flores, 6-1, 6-2. Matua Iakopo beat Haedon Kaufman, 6-1, 6-1. Cameron Bunch beat Rudy Villalobos, 6-1, 6-2. Cristo Miranda made quick work of Eduardo Castro, 6-0, 6-0, and was the first one off the court. Brayan Herrera made it a singles sweep with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Ricky Figueroa.
In doubles, Arreguin and Gutierrez dominated Castro and Flores, 6-1, 6-0. Iakopo and Miranda teamed to beat Kaufman and Villalobos, 6-2, 6-2. Kyler Fields and Oscar Martinez lost their first set to Ernesto Prado and Marco Sanchez, 2-6, but rallied to win, 6-2, 10-3.
Taft improved to 14-2 overall and 6-0 in the South Sequoia League. Wasco dropped to 9-7 overall and 4-2 for third place in the SSL.
In the JV match, Isaiah Sharp beat Joel Rodriguez, 6-2, 6-2. Brian Ortega shut out Jose Osuna, 6-0, 6-0. Sam Kendrick beat Jose O compo 6-2, 6-0. Justin Covington beat Andrew Barboza, 6-0, 6-1. Phuc Nguyen beat Carlos Carriedo, 6-3, 6-0. And, Elver Zavala beat Salvador Rosas, 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles, No. 2 Ortega and No. 9 Pedro Martinez lost to No. 1 Rodriguez and No. 2 Osuna, 4-8. Number 4 Covington and No. 11 Denilson Portello beat No. 3 O compo and No. 4 Barboza, 8-4. George Hartley and Kaleb Harlan beat Michael Saldivar and Oscar Lopez, 6-2, 6-3.
Taft’s JV improved to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in the SSL.
