  • A Taft man is facing five felony counts following his arrest for several crimes, the first of which was a burglary at Buena Vista Golf Course last week.
Jasmes Brian Swope, 45, is accused of burglarizing a shed at the golf course, then stealing a truck from a home in the area when his car broke down and stealing some items inside the truck.
Kern County Sheriff's deputies investigated a theft from the shed at the golf course at 10256 Golf Course Road that occurred between 10 p.m. March 11 and 7:30 a.m. on March 12.
A computer and golf clubs were stolen, Sgt. Martin Downs said.
On the way back into town, the deputies noticed a car parked near the car scene.
That car had broken down and items from the theft were inside, Downs said.
A short distance away, deputies were sent to investigate another crime – the theft of a pickup from the driveway of a home on the 28000 block of Golf Course Road.
A short time later, a man identified as Swope was seen back at the car that had broken down with the stolen items, and deputies arrested Swope, Downs said.
In his pocket were the keys to the stolen pickup.
It was later located on Welch Street in Maricopa, and several items of value left in the truck were missing.
Swope was charged with one count of grand theft auto, two count's of grand theft, one count of burglary, one count of possession of stolen property and a felony count of petty theft with three or more prior arrests.
Swope is being held on $150,000 bail.
Kern County Superior Court records show Swope was awaiting sentencing on a guilty plea to a burglary plea on Jan. 24.
