  • YREKA – A Yreka woman was arrested on March 15 on a felony count of possession of a weapon on school grounds, stated Yreka Police Department (YPD) Chief Brian Bowles.
Stephanie Leyva, 22, was booked into the Siskiyou County Jail on $15,000 bail. She has since posted bail.

According to Bowles, the incident occurred on March 8. Officers were dispatched to Discovery High School in Yreka upon receiving a report that Leyva threatened two students with a gun.
When officers arrived at the school, Leyva was no longer at the scene. The officers took reports from the two alleged victims – a juvenile male and female – who Bowles said are acquainted with Leyva.
The alleged victims reported to officers that the woman had verbally threatened them, chased them and pulled a gun on them. One of the alleged victims reported believing the object was a BB gun while the other believed it was a firearm.
Bowles said his department obtained an arrest warrant and Leyva was taken into custody on March 15.
Siskiyou County District Attorney Kirk Andrus said there was evidence at the scene that the gun Leyva allegedly used was a BB gun. Numerous un-shot BBs were reportedly spilled around her tracks.
He noted that he intends to additionally charge Leyva with a misdemeanor count of exhibiting a replica firearm.
