  • Construction starts this week on the Tenth Street rehabilitation project that will put down a new road surface between Tenth and Kern Street and add a four-way stop sign at the intersection of Tenth and San Emidio streets.
The project should last about a month.
The resurfacing project will be similar to work down recently on Sixth Street and Harrison Street and will result traffic being limited to one lane and drivers should expect delays.
The Taft City Council awarded the bid to the Griffith Company and approved the funding for the project on March 5 and at that time construction was scheduled to start in the first week in April, but a notice to proceed was issued last week and traffic cones have already gone up.
The construction is scheduled to be completed in 25 working days and the anticipated completion date is April 30, according to the city notice.
The job is expected to cost about $490,000. Most of that money – $362,000 – is federal money, but the city had to come up with $128,000.
That money was set aside several years ago and doesn't come out of the current budget.
