Taft scores all nine points while improving to 7-1 in league play
The Taft High varsity tennis team beat the Robert F. Kennedy Thunderbirds, 9-0, Friday. Kennedy did not field a JV team.
In the No. 1 match, Chuy Gutierrez beat Christian Sanchez, 6-3, 6-2. Rafa Arreguin beat Ivan Banuelos, 6-1, 6-1. Matua Iakopo beat Joe Gonzalez, 6-0, 7-5. Cristo Miranda shutout Ranier Lagula, 6-0, 6-0. Cameron Bunch shutout Joshua Corpuz, 6-0, 6-0. And, Brayan Herrera shutout of Brian Pascual, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Kyler Fields and Isaiah Sharp blanked Sanchez and Gonzelez, 6-0, 6-0. Gilbert Orozco and Mitchell Emberson beat Banuelos and Lagula, 6-3, 6-2. Chris Blakely and Junior Tuuamalemalo beat Mathew Palomo and Alexis Diaz, 6-1, 6-1.
“This was the varsity debut for Isaiah, who moved up from the No. 1 JV spot,” coach Jim Carnal said. “It was also the first varsity match from Mitchell, Junior and Chris, and they all won easily. The last three are all seniors playing their first year of tennis.”
Taft’s varsity improved to 15-3 overall and 7-1 in the SSL. Kennedy dropped to 1-9 overall and 1-7 in the SSL.
Taft hosts McFarland on Tuesday and travels to Arvin Friday.
