The Taft High varsity boys’ tennis team beat the McFarland Cougars, 9-0, on Tuesday and the Robert F. Kennedy Thunderbirds, 9-0, Friday. Both games were at home. Neither team fielded a JV team.
In the No. 1 singles match, Chuy Gutierrez blanked Luis Cazares, 6-0, 6-0. Rafa Arreguin beat Jesse Dionicio, 6-0, 6-1, Matua Iakopo shutout Jatneil Hernandez, 6-0, 6-0. Cristo Miranda bageled Luis Campos, 6-0, 6-0. Cameron Bunch was the first off the court with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Andres Rocha. And, Brayan Herrera blanked Daniel Diaz, 6-0, 6-0.
In the closest match of the day, Kyler Fields and Oscar Martinez beat Cazares and Dionicio, 6-2, 6-2. Isaiah Sharp and Gilbert Orozco bageled Hernandez and Campos, 6-0, 6-0. McFarland forfeit No. 3 doubles because they only brought six players. In an exhibition game, Mitchell Emberson and Junior Tuuamalemalo beat Rocha and Diaz, 6-0, 6-0.
The match was a tad closer against RFK, Gutierrez beat Christian Sanchez, 6-3, 6-2. Arreguin beat Ivan Banuelos, 6-1, 6-1. Iakopo beat Joe Gonzalez, 6-0, 7-5. Miranda shutout Ranier Lagula, 6-0, 6-0. Bunch shutout Joshua Corpuz, 6-0, 6-0. And, Herrera shutout of Brian Pascual, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Fields and Sharp blanked Sanchez and Gonzelez, 6-0, 6-0. Orozco and Emberson beat Banuelos and Lagula, 6-3, 6-2. Chris Blakely and Tuuamalemalo beat Mathew Palomo and Alexis Diaz, 6-1, 6-1.
“This was the varsity debut for Isaiah, who moved up from the No. 1 JV spot,” coach Jim Carnal said. “It was also the first varsity match for Mitchell, Junior and Chris, and they all won easily. The last three are all seniors playing their first year of tennis.”
Taft’s varsity improved to 16-3 overall and 8-1 in the SSL. McFarland doped to 0-9 in the SSL. Kennedy dropped to 1-9 overall and 1-7 in the SSL.
Taft travels to Arvin on Friday.
