ARVIN — The Taft High varsity boys’ tennis team beat the Arvin Bears, 8-1, on Friday there. Arvin did not field a JV team.
The Bear’s No. 1 player, who finished fourth in the league last year, Mario Cabaloza, beat Chuy Gutierrez, 6-3, 6-2.
It was all Taft after that. Rafa Arreguin beat Nicho Hernandez, 6-2, 6-1.
Cristo Miranda beat Miguel Lopez, 6-3, 6-2. Cameron Bunch beat Erik Moreno, 6-1, 6-1. Brayan Herrera beat Ahmad Ikram, 6-1, 6-2. And, Isaiah Sharp was the first one off the court, shutting out Rafael De La Cruz, 6-0, 6-0.
The most competitive match of the day was No. 1 doubles featuring the top two players from each team. Once Gutierrez and Arreguin began keeping the ball away from Cabaloza in the second set, the Taft duo came back to beat Cabaloza and Hernandez, 2-6, 6-3, 10-8, coach Jim Carnal said.
Bunch and Herrera beat Ikram and De La Cruz, 6-1, 6-1. And, Kyler Fields and Oscar Martinez won by forfeit when Arvin could not field eight players. They beat Moreno and Christian Vargas in an exhibition match, 6-2, 6-0.
Taft improved to 17-3 overall and 9-1 in the South Sequoia League. Arvin dropped to 9-11 overall and 2-8 in the SSL.
