DELANO — The Taft High varsity boys’ tennis team beat Cesar Chavez, 8-1, there on Tuesday and so did Taft’s JV team.
The top two varsity matches were competitive. At No. 1 singles, Chuy Gutierrez outplayed Zedrick Cabico, 6-2, 6-3. Cesar Chavez got its only varsity win at No. 2, when left-handed Joel Rojas beat Rafa Arreguin, 7-5, 3-6, 10-7, on the breezy afternoon.
The rest of the matches were decidedly one sided. Matua Iakopo beat Gerardo Arzola, 6-1, 6-0. Cristo Miranda beat Juan Gallegos, 6-3, 6-0.
Cameron Bunch was the first one off the court with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Raymond Rabena. And, Brayan Herrera disposed of Humberto Lopez, 6-1, 6-2.
The story had a similar plot line in doubles. Gutierrez and Miranda teamed to beat Cabico and Rojas, 8-2. Kyler Fields and Oscar Martinez beat John Andreas and Pedro Juarez, 8-1. And, Isaiah Sharp and Gilbert Orozco beat Neil Nair and Eugenio Tatunay, 8-3.
Taft improved to 18-3 overall and 10-1 in the South Sequoia League.
In the JV match, Pastor Magana beat Riggie Casabar, 8-1. Sam Kendrick beat Mahin Chowdhury, 8-2. Brian Ortega bageled Jorge Arellano, 8-0. Justin Covington shut out Bruce Garza, 8-0. Elver Zavala and Phuc Nguyen won by forfeit when Cesar Chavez could only field four players.
In doubles, No. 5 Zavala and No. 6 Nguyen beat No. 1 Casabar and No. 3 Arellano, 8-3. Cesar Chavez got its only JV win at No 2 doubles when No. 2 Chowdhury and No. 4 Garza beat No. 7 Kaleb Harlan and No. 8. Alex Arguello, 8-5. Cesar Chavez forfeit No. 3 doubles for lack of players.
With the 8-1 win, Taft’s JV improved to 11-1 overall and 6-0 in the SSL.
