Defendant was charged with attempted armed robbery, but pleads no contest to grand theft from a person
A Taft teenager will be sentenced next week on grand theft from a person charges stemming from what Taft Police described as an unsuccessful robbery attempt in early March.
Derek Fale Atkisson, 19, pleaded no contest to a felony count of grand theft from a person and another charge of attempted armed robbery was dropped.
Atkisson was arrested by Taft Police on March 13 after the the would-be victim told them when was accosted by a man in the area of Sixth and Finely just before 10 p.m. on a Wednesday night.
He told the officers that suspect approached him in a white minivan who brandished a handgun a demanded money.
The victim fled the scene and called 911.
officers searched the area and saw a man driving a van matching the suspect description and detained him.
The victim identified the driver as his assailant, police said.
