  • More than 600 take advantage of Rotary Health Fair

  • The annual Taft Rotary Fair was another huge success.
    More than 600 people visited the health fair, taking advantage of the free consultations with a wide variety of medical specialists and getting very low cost medical screenings.

    A new addition to the Health Fair was low-cost mammograms.
    Truxtun Radiology had a mobile clinic at the fair and performed 23 mammograms.
    "That was more than they expected," said Dr. Vibul Tang, the director of the health fair. "They were very happy and they said they will be back next year."
    The mammograms cost only $55.
    The low-cost blood tests were so popular people were arriving before the testing started at 8 a.m.
    More than 60 people had tests done, Tang said.
    There were also 16 preschool dental exams done and 27 children received immunizations through First 5.
    The event offers unique opportunities for free consultations with a wide variety of medical specialists and it can make a big difference.
Tang said the skin specialist, Dr. Victor Constantine, diagnosed a case of skin cancer at the health fair, enabling the person to make arrangements have to cancerous grown removed.
    Taft's health fair is unique because of the free consultations, Tang said.
Other health fair offer only exhibits and some screenings.
    "This is very very helpful to people," Tang. "These are things they can't get anywhere else. The prices we offer, they can't get anywhere else."
    There were 12 medical doctors at the health fair, plus a dentist, chiropractor, and doctor of audiology.
    Bakersfield College nursing students performed blood pressure checks.
    In addition, there were 13 vendors.
