  • TUHS seniors receive more than $200,000 in scholarships

  • Mitchell Emberson and Chanel Tremain were the big winners at the Taft Union High School Honors Night Monday April 22.
    To the applause of an auditorium full of their peers, parents and friends, Emberson and Tremain walked off stage with $22,500 and $21,850, respectively, in college scholarships.
    Both received $12,000 from the Confidence Foundation, originally Whittier Oil. Emberson also received $3,000 from Holmes Western Oil Corp., $1,500 from Berry Petroleum, and $1,000 each from Oildorado Inc., the Mathew Brice Dragoo Memorial and from Chevron.
    Tremain also received $3,000 each from Holmes Western Oil Corp. and the TUHS class of 1949, $1,500 from Berry Petroleum and $1,000 from Chevron.
    Altogether, 76 students received 295 scholarships from 62 donors totaling $209,365. The Taft College Merit Scholarship was the biggest donor, chipping in $41,400.
    Other big winners were:
    Keana Arnold with $7,350, including $2,000 from Holmes Western, $1,500 from Berry Petroleum and $1,000 each from Oildorado Inc., Exxon Mobil and Chevron.
    Eric Bailey with $6,500, including $2,000 from Holmes Western, $1,500 from the Class of 1950 and $1,000 from Chevron.
    Vaughn Richardson with $6,000, including $2,000 from Holmes Western, $1,500 from Berry Petroleum and $1,000 from Chevron Valley.
    Erika Heredia with $5,600, including $2,500 from Occidental Petroleum and $1,000 each from Holmes Western and Chevron.
    Karina Montoya with $5,500, including $1,500 from Berry Petroleum and $1,000 each from Exxon Mobil, Holmes Western and Chevron.
    Abigail Popejoy Dodson with $5,350, including $2,000 from San Joaquin Refining and $1,000 each from Holmes Western and Chevron.
    Yeraldin Barrera with $4,900, including $1,500 from the Class of 1950 and $1,000 each from Chevron and National Health Services.
    Markie Oglesby with $4,850, including $2,000 each from San Joaquin Refining and Holmes Western.

    Daniela Castro-Urias with $3,550, including $1,000 from the Soroptimists.
    Gloria Hartley with $3,550, including $1,500 from Berry Petroleum and $1,000 from Chevron.
    Kristine Arellano with $3,250, including $1,000 each from Holmes Western and Chevron.
    Mariah Martinez-McCray with $3,250, including $1,500 from Berry Petroleum and $1,000 from Holmes Western.
    Haley Houghton with $3,200, including $1,500 from Berry Petroleum.
