  • Community cleanup attracting lots of volunteers

  • Nearly 40 people have already signed on as volunteers for Saturday's Taft Cleanup and more are expected.
    Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. at the Veteran's memorial park on east Kern street, then head up to south Taft to clean along Wood Street from Highway 33 west to 10th Street.
    Trash bags, gloves and bottled water will be provided to volunteers, who are asked to wear work clothes and closed-toed shoes.
    City employee Christy Lowe, who is coordinating the the volunteer signups, said Thursday morning at least 38 people have already signed up, including 7 from the city staff, 13 members of the TC volleyball team, 5 from the Midway 4-H Club, 5 from the Taft ARC- 2 from the Lions, and 6 individuals.
    Taft College Superintendent- President Dena Maloney contacted Lowe Thursday morning and said the total TC contingent may reach 40 people.
    The cleanup is a cooperative effort involving Kern County Supervisor David Couch, The Taft Chamber of Commerce, Westside Waste Management and several other organizations and businesses.
    After the cleanup, the volunteers are invited to return back to the park for lunch followed by Dreyer's ice cream.
    Lunch provided by Occidental Petroleum, water provided by Fastenal, soda provided by Albertsons and ice cream provided by Dreyers.
