After a week and a half off, the No.5 seeded Taft varsity baseball team was looking to regain their magic in the first round of the CIF-CS Division IV playoffs. Instead, the No.12 seeded Golden Valley Bulldogs had other ideas Wednesday afternoon after pulling away to defeat the Wildcats 4-1 in Taft.
Both teams scored a run in the opening inning of the game with Taft's run coming on a pair of singles.
Neither side was able to get much going for the next two innings. The lone exception was the third inning when the Bulldogs got two runners on in their half before coming away empty handed while Steven Gee singled in the Wildcat part of the inning. Gee advanced to third but was stranded.
Golden Valley broke the tie in the fourth with a pair of singles and a force out at second for a run.
The Bulldogs added two more runs in the sixth on a pair of errors and two singles.
After two quiet innings, the Wildcats made one last noise in their half of the sixth, starting with Gee's single to leadoff the inning. Following a sacrifice bunt, a hit batter and a wild pitch, the Wildcats had a golden opportunity to score but the next two batters were retired to end the threat.
