  • Relay for Life ready to start

  • More than $70,000 raised already. It all starts 9 a.m. Saturday

  •  Cancer survivors will be the stars of the show Saturday morning when the 5th annual Taft Relay for Life gets underway.
    The day will start with a continental breakfast, registration and free T-shirts for all survivors when the came, then they'll klick off the 24-hour event with a lap around the track at Patterson-O'Brien Field.
    Ginny Miller will be the torch bearer for the survivor and caregivers lap that kicks off the relay
    Cancer survivor Greg Coker will be the speaker at the start, and more survivors will speak on stage throughout the event.
    The relay has events going on nearly all the time.
    By Friday morning the fundraising was picking up quite a bit.
    Total money raised had increased to $73,426.
    Debbie Kiser was the runaway leader in fundraising so far with $7,819. Tina Leikam was in second with $3,940 and Laura Price was third with $2,530.
    Kiser's & Friends Kicking Cancer was the top fundraising team so far with $10,383, the Cuyama Booster Club was second with $8,593
    A performance by Truxtun Mile will be on of the highlights, plus the always- popular “Dude Looks Like a Lady” contest at 2 p.m. and Soroptimist Women Against Kancer (SWAK) was third with $5,302 so far.

    Information will be available in 3 locations. There will be bulletin boards posted at the 200-yd and 400-yd line as well as registration. Any announcements you have can be brought to the stage and it will be transferred to the boards.
