  • Taft is going to have two Memorial Day observances this year.
    There will be a ceremonial flag raising at a newly-lighted flag pole at the Veterans Building in Ford City Saturday morning, as well as the traditional community service at Westside District cemetery on Monday.
    The Kern County Honor Guard will be in Taft for the flag raising at the Veterans Building, located at 218 Taylor Street.
    Fourth District Supervisor David Couch is also going to attend.
    It will be held at 10 a.m.
    On Monday, the community will gather at 10 a.m. at the cemetery for the traditional Memorial Day service.
    This year's event will feature the customary laying of the symbolic wreaths honoring the men and women who have given their lives in the service, a flag raising by the Civil Air Patrol, Lincoln Junior High School, the American Legion firing squad and dedication of a veterans memorial.
    Army veteran Gary Summers will speak and Kitty Shinn will read a poem.
    Summers, Steve Burnham, Ron Maddox and Nick Edgecomb will present he traditional floral tributes and Summers will present the POW and MIA remembrance.
    The Lincoln Junior High band will perform patriotic music and McKenna Haven and Shaylee Harness will play taps.
    Dee Dee Stoller will be the bagpiper.
    The event is sponsored by West Side Cemetery District, Erickson & Brown Funeral Home and Fellows American Legion Post No. 63.
