The long-awaited downtown motel for Taft is moving closer to becoming a reality.
A site plan for the proposed Best western Plus motel has been submitted to the city, the city has approved transfer of the land to developer Geary Coats, who will then transfer it to the project owner.
“It has never been this close,” City Manager Craig Jones said Wednesday morning.
The city council approved the transfer of the property after meeting with Coats Tuesday, then huddling for a 10-minute closed session at Tuesday night's council meeting.
The Taft Planning Commission is scheduled to discuss approval of the plan to construct a 60-room, three-story structure at the southwest corner of Sixth and Main on the north side of Rails to Trails.
This will be the first major commercial construction project in the Sunset Rails property, a 47-acre sit along Rails to Trails in what city leaders hope will become a new section of the downtown commercial core of the city.
The owner and applicant is Sohan Patel of Bakersfield and the company is DEEPA Investment and Lodging LLC is
The city has been activity trying to recruit developers to build a new motel or hotel in d downtown with two goals – alleviating a shortage of quality lodging in Taft and pumping new life into the downtown.
