  • Kern County firefighters have been busy in Taft, battling two structure fires that broke out within about 90 minutes of each other.
Both fires destroyed outbuildings, one in South Taft, one in Taft Heights.
KCFD arson investigators were called to the scene of the most recent in a string of fires that have broken out on Montview Avenue in South Taft.
The latest fire broke out about 3:45 p.m. Sunday behind 415 Montview, right across the street from the ruins of a house that has burned twice since February.
Sunday's fire started behind a boarded up and abandoned house and destroyed one shed and a second shed next door behind 417 Montview that was going to be torn down anyway, said Kern County Fire Capt. Josh Naus.
    More properties were being threatened.
A small fire started in the grass on the west side of the alley.
"We found one shed fully involved, spreading through the fence to the north side," Naus said.
Naus said its hard to estimated the damage since the structures were probably going to be torn down anyway.
Arson investigators were dispatched to the scene for several reasons, Naus said.
One was the recent history of fires in the area. Sunday blaze was the fourth structure fire on the same block in less than five months.
There have been several other fires in the area, too.
Engines from Taft, Maricopa and Fellows along with a truck from Taft were sent to the fire and had it knocked down in about 15 minutes.
The engine and truck from the Taft station were on their way from the first fire scene when the second fire was reported.
It leveled an outbuilding behind a home on the 700 block of A street that is vacant and being renovated.
The outbuilding was destroyed and a fence patio furniture and other items on adjacent properties next door and on B Street were damaged.
