Construction of a new 3-story hotel in downtown Taft is imminent, so a formal ground-breaking ceremony is being planned.
The ground-breaking is tentatively scheduled for 10 a.m. on July 9 at the site of a new Best Western Express.
The Taft Planning Commission has already approved the 60-room, three-story structure at the southwest corner of Sixth and Main on the north side of Rails to Trails.
It is the first major development on the Sunset Rails Property.
City Manager Craig Jones called it “a done deal.” The property transfer closed escrow last week.
There is no word yet on an estimated date of completion for the long-awaited downtown hotel.
Jones also gave hints that more development may be coming, triggered by the construction of the hotel.
He said there has been interest by others in building near the hotel.
“People are paying attention in the investment world,” Jones told the Taft City Council Tuesday night. “We're getting more interest from people wanting to go in next to the hotel.”
He said it was too early to discuss who might be interested.
In another Sunset Rails project, Jones said developer Geary Coats has discussed putting in an RV park
on Supply Row at Second Street, using the old Trading Post as a clubhouse. Jones said the RV park might only be there temporarily while the Sunset Rails project builds out.
