Houchin Blood Bank will be bringing their Bloodmobile to Taft next Tuesday (June 25) to collect life-giving blood. They will be at the Taft Chamber of Commerce parking lot on the corner of Kern and Fourth Streets from 1p.m. to 6 p.m. .
•Giving blood is safe. All medical authorities agree that it is not possible to contract any disease by donating blood.
•Giving blood is easy. You answer some questions, roll up your sleeve, feel only a brief prick, and you’ll be done before you know it.
•Giving blood is fast. It usually takes less than an hour, start to finish.
•Giving blood saves the lives of others. You will be helping children and adults alike. Each donation can save the lives of up to four persons.
Blood donations could save your life! 75% of all Americans will need blood transfusions sometime in their lifetimes, but only 3% ever donate, making it very difficult to meet the needs of the community. There are individuals from the Westside who require blood almost every week, so you might save the life of someone you know!
When preparing for donation, eat a well-balanced meal within four hours before giving blood. Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid caffeine and alcohol since they are dehydrating. You should be free from all illnesses. If you are taking medications, please know the names. Donors can be any age and must weigh at least 110 pounds.
Do you know your blood type? In the United States, the most common frequency is O+, which occurs in 37.4% of the population; that is the “Universal Donor,” so if that is your blood type, please make a special effort to come in. That is followed by A+ (35.7%), B+ (8.5%), O- (6.6%), A- (6.3%), AB+ (3.4%), B- (1.5%) and AB- (0.6%).
Blood donors are very special people. Come give it a try, and bring someone with you. You’ll be glad you did! Remember, “People live when people give!” Thank you very much!Hou
