He reportedly told deputies he as "tripping" on spice
A Taft man arrested for a strong-armed robbery in Ford City earlier this year pleaded no contest to grand theft from a person in Kern County Superior Court on Tuesday.
Luis Diaz will be sentenced on July 23. The robbery charge was dropped when he pled no contest to the grand theft count.
Diaz, 23, was arrested by Kern County Sheriff's deputies on Feb. 21.
Diaz had called 911 on a cell phone from the area of Date and Tyler streets and reported that people were trying to kill home, according to reports.
About the same time, however, dispatchers also received a call from a woman at a trailer park in the 100 block of Taylor Streets saying she had been accosted by a man who demanded her cell phone, then took it forcibly from her hand.
The suspect the victim gave matched Diaz and she later identified him as the man who took her phone.
Diaz reportedly admitted to deputies that he was under the influence of "spice" and was "tripping out."
Diaz has been held in custody on $15,000 bail since his arrest.
