  • In about five and a half weeks, the Taft High football teams will kick off their season under hot August conditions.
The Wildcat varsity football team got an early taste of that in Bakersfield Wednesday evening when they competed in their final passing league in hot weather at Liberty High School.
“I think we got better over the three weeks,” said Taft assistant coach Mike Goodwin. “Both sides of the ball we got better.”
Taft opened the evening with a near 40 minute scrimmage against a familiar South Sequoia League opponent in Shafter in the Liberty High Stadium. Both teams got off to a rough start with Shafter intercepting a pass while the Generals offense went three and out.
After the scrimmage was over the Wildcats rotated to a side field to face Stockdale. Since there were only seven teams taking part, Frazier Mountain joined in.
As a result, the Taft offense would go up against the Falcons defense then the Frazier Mountain defense would go up against the Stockdale offense. The teams and sides would change off over roughly the next 35 minutes.
Now that the three weeks of passing league are over and practice finished off Thursday, the Wildcat players will get a break from football through the month of July.
They will return for the fall practice on Monday, Aug. 5 on the Taft High practice field.
