  • A cooling center for people that need to get out of the extreme heat will be open in Taft for at least three days.
The local cooling center, located in the Taft Veterans Building, 218 Taylor Street, will be open from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Drinks and snacks will be available at the cooling center.
The Taft location is one of 12 cooling centers around the county.
The centers in the Valley portion of the county are open when temperatures are expected to hit 105 degrees or higher.
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the entire region as a major heatwave is expected to push daytime temperatures well over 100 degrees for several days.
Friday's high is expected to hit 105, then climb to 108 on Saturday, 110 on Sunday and to 111 on Monday. Overnight lows will be in the upper 70s to near 80.
Temperatures should drop slightly on Tuesday, and forecasters are waiting to see if a low-pressure system off the coast is going to bring in significant cooling for July 4.
It's possible that the holiday could be below 100.
