Temperatures in Taft soared to 112 degrees by 3 p.m. Tuesday as a heatwave continues and the excessive heat warning has been extended for another day into the July4 holiday.
The local cooling shelter, located in the Taft Veterans Building, will be open Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. for people who don't have a cool place to shelter during the day.
Water and snacks are provided.
It's still going to be hot for another couple of days. Wednesday''s high is expected to be 109 after an overnight low of 81 with a high on July 4 of 107.
Friday will mark the beginning of the real cooling with a high of 101 and temperatures may slip below 100 for the wekend with overnight lows in the 70s.
