Team falls to a pair of Delano squads

One could say that the Taft Divas all-star softball team had a long day in rough conditions after they were swept in the Division II softball tournament at the Franklin Field Complex Saturday.

Taft’s day started mid morning with a 20-3 loss to Delano 1 on Oliver Field.

Delano had first crack in the top half of the first inning when they erupted for 10 runs on three hits including an inside the park home run.
Only two of the runs were scored on hits, the rest of the runs were scored on two wild pitches, a two base throw, an error and two passed balls.

After Delano had scored the 10 runs while sending 12 batters to the plate, the inning was called due to the mercy rule.

Taft made an attempt to get back into the game in their half of the first inning. With one out, Alexis McCord and Madelynne Dunham walked.
McCord went on to score on Kayron Vasquez’s single while Dunham scored on a throwing error by the Delano infield.

The Divas threatened to score more runs by loading the bases. However, Delano got out of the inning with a tag out at home plate.

Delano duplicated their run total in the second inning by scoring ten runs highlighted by a triple and a double for the only hits of the inning. After Delano had sent 10 batters and scored the 10 runs the inning was called again.

Taft got one of the runs back in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Alyssa Parish walked and took second on a wild pitch. After reaching first base on a tag out at third, Shelby Forbes stole second before taking third on a wild pitch. Forbes went on to score on a passed ball.

By losing their first game, the Divas were sent to the losers bracket where they had to play the very next game against another Delano team.

Unlike the first game, the second game was close, but Delano 1 held on to defeat Taft 10-6.

Taft scored four runs in the first inning and two in the second inning. Meanwhile, Delano scored six runs in the first and four in the second.
Dunham had two singles and two runs scored while Madison Rogers and Taylor Reed each had a single and scored once. Parish had a single while Shelby Fields chipped in with a double and a run. Neveah Craft had a single while Jonelle Rouell had a single and a run.
