  • Man pleads no contest to burglary

  • Suspect was caught in alley with stolen .40-caliber handgun, police say

  • A man arrested by Taft Police on June 18 carrying what officers described as a stolen .40-caliber handgun pleaded no contest to first-degree burglary and carrying a loaded firearm with a felony conviction Monday in Taft Branch of Kern County Superior Court.
    Three other felony counts possession of loaded, stolen firearm, were dropped as part of a plea agreement.
    Mitchel Ray West, 28, will be sentenced on July 29.
    West was spotted by police walking in an alley about 1:45 a.m. and a sergeant saw the suspect place items in a trash dumpster as he approached.
    The sergeant found a gun in the dumpster, and found items of jewelry on West that matched items taken in a burglary the day before, according to a Taft Police news release.
    West was also wanted for removing a monitoring bracelet placed on him for a prior felony conviction.
