  • Tournaments are known to have their share of wild swings when it comes to emotion.
The Taft 9-10 year olds all-star baseball team did it in a twenty four hour period this past weekend when they split a pair of games at the District 61 tournament in Buttonwilow.
Taft started their run Saturday with a 13-7 victory over Delano.
Brock Mizener had four runs batted in during the game while Dalton Brown had two. Logun Clark had three runs batted in and two hits. Manny Chavez had two runs batted in and two hits.
Twenty four hours later, Taft tasted a different result after falling to Arvin 10-5.
Taft had a chance to take the early lead when Logun Clark and Mike White singled but Arvin got out of the jam by turning a double play and tagging a runner.
Arvin capitalized in their half of the first inning by scoring two runs on two hit batters, two errors and a walk.
An inning later, Arvin struck again by scoring three runs starting with a single to right field. The first run scored one batter later on a three base throwing error. Grayson continued the rally with a single before advancing on a sacrifice bunt and scoring on a two base infield error.
Taft got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, White walked before Kristofer Downey hit a two out run scoring double. Downey advanced to third on the throw while scoring on a passed ball.
Arvin got both of the runs back in the fourth inning thanks to a pair of errors to start the rally, a passed ball and Daniel’s single to left field.
Taft’s offense came alive in the fifth inning when they sent nine batters to the plate. After Macayla Wells walked and Kyler Miles was hit by a pitch, J.D. Hall loaded the bases with a bunt single. Manny Chavezs followed with a single up the middle to score Wells and Miles.
The team had a chance to cut into the lead again in the inning when they loaded the bases but the next two batters were retired.
Arvin matched Taft’s output in their half of the fifth inning by scoring three runs thanks in part to Evelyn’s leadoff hit an error, a bunt single from Junior and Ivan’s bloop single.
Taft returned to action Monday when they faced Delano again. If they won, the team would advance to the title game Tuesday for a rematch against Arvin.
