  • In four weeks, football season will officially get underway.
Until then baseball is still running strong after the Taft Longhorns went 2-1 in the Central Coast Showdown this past weekend on the coast.
"We did really well," said Taft coach Les Clark. "We just played flawless."
The Longhorns were part of a tournament that included 15 teams ranging from Fresno, Merced, Bakersfield to Temecula.
Taft started off the tournament well Saturday when they defeated the Rebels baseball team in the morning before handing the Clovis Black team a 7-6 loss in extra innings.
During the Clovis game, Chad Berry and Brock Mizener each went 3-for-3 and helped the team win the game.
Both games took place at the Hagerman Sports Complex.
By winning both games, the Longhorns had completed an undefeated round of pool play and were seeded sixth.
However, the tournament ended on a sour note for Taft following a 9-3 loss to the Temecula Heat in the quarterfinal round at the Pismo Beach Sports Complex Sunday afternoon.
The Heat went on to lose to eventual champion LaCresenta Monarchs in the next round of the playoffs.
"We really got production through the lineup," Clark said of the tournament. "The boys have worked really, really hard to get to this point."
The Longhorns will play in another tournament Saturday, Aug. 24
