  • Many Taft residents were roused out of their sleep early Monday morning by a series of loud noises.
    Taft Police Chief Ed Whiting said the noises came from fireworks.
    Taft officers responded to the 300 block of Fillmore at 2:51 a.m. to assist the Kern County Sheriff.
    Deputies received multiple calls of illegal shooting and suspicious circumstances at the same time, an activity log shows.
    In an 11 minute span between 2:49 a.m. and 3 a.m., deputies received five calls in that general area, including three reports of illegal shooting from the 300 block of Pierce Street, 500 block of Jackson Street and 500 block of Harrison Street.
    Deputies also received reports of a suspicious person in the 300 block of Fillmore and suspicious circumstances in the 300 block of Pierce.
