Crews were servicing well when explosion and fire occurred

Three people were injured, at least one with critical burns, in an explosion and fire at Elk Hills Saturday afternoon.

The victims were servicing an oil rig in the western part of the Elk Hills property. at the time, according to the Kern County Fire Department.

Their injuries ranged from minor to critical with burns and other injuries.

One victim was airlifted by helicopter to San Joaquin Hospital in Bakersfield, which has a burn center.

The other two victims were transported by ground ambulance to Bakersfield hospitals.

The victims' identities were not released.

Firefighters were dispatched to a report of an oil well explosion on the west end of the oilfield near gate 5 at 2:40 p.m.

First arriving crews started treating the injured.

As additional firefighters and equipment arrived on scen, they began fighting the fire but were hampered by a a lack of a water supply in the area.

A total of seven engines and 27 personnel were sent to the fire.
Crews were eventually able to access the well and close an open valve that was fueling the fire, the KCFD said in a news release.

The cause of the explosion and fire is under investigation
