  • Construction and high temperatures are making have forced the Taft City School District to put Lincoln Junior High School on a short school day for the next two weeks.
Students went home with letters notifying their parents that the school will be on a modified minimum day schedule for the rest of this week and next week.
Classes will start at 8 a.m. and students will attend all 7 periods.
Students will be released at 12:37 p.m.
The district is planning on resuming a normal schedule on Sept. 3.
Lincoln is undergoing a modernization and an upgraded electrical hookup into the PG&E grid won't be completed until mid September.
That left the school with no air conditioning after the old swamp coolers were removed.
The district brought in some portable evaporative coolers to use in the affected classrooms, but the high heat and humidity on the first day of school forced the district to cut class hours.
The high in Taft Monday afternoon reached 108 degrees with dew points in the 60s, limiting the effectiveness of the evaporative coolers.
